Sgraffito isn’t so much a building technique as it is a finishing design. So, for this project you will need to use a building technique (slab, coil, pinch pot) to complete some sort of vessel which you will then complete using sgraffito.
I love the effects that can be created using sgraffito. Check out some of these awesome examples from Pinterest:
Basically sgraffito is a process of decoration that occurs before the bisque fire. A greenware pot is painted with underglaze or engobe and then a design is carved out. So you will begin by painted a large selection of your pot with underglaze, then anything that you would like to be left white will be carved out.
Sgraffito is great because you can make detailed designs with it, but it also provides your work with texture.
